Code of Ethics

The American Institute of Bankers (AIB) is committed to promoting integrity, professionalism, and public trust within the banking and financial services sector. All members, certified professionals, board members, trainers, and affiliated partners of AIB are required to adhere to this Code of Ethics. This Code establishes the ethical principles and professional standards expected of individuals representing or associated with AIB.

1. Integrity & Honesty

Members shall:

  • Act with honesty and transparency in all professional dealings
  • Avoid misrepresentation of qualifications, experience, or credentials
  • Provide accurate and truthful information in applications and declarations
  • Refrain from any deceptive or fraudulent conduct

Integrity is the foundation of professional banking practice and public confidence.

2. Professional Competence

Members shall:

  • Maintain professional knowledge and technical competence
  • Engage in Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  • Perform duties diligently and responsibly
  • Accept assignments only when qualified to perform them

Professional designations (Ab-AIB, PB-AIB, SB-AIB, FB-AIB) must reflect genuine competence and compliance.

3. Compliance with Laws & Regulations

Members shall:

  • Comply with applicable banking laws, regulations, and supervisory standards
  • Uphold anti-money laundering (AML) and financial crime prevention principles
  • Support lawful and ethical financial practices
  • Cooperate with regulatory authorities when required

AIB expects its members to promote a culture of regulatory awareness and accountability.

4. Confidentiality & Data Protection

Members shall:

  • Safeguard confidential client, employer, and institutional information
  • Avoid unauthorized disclosure of sensitive data
  • Respect privacy and data protection standards
  • Use information solely for legitimate professional purposes

Confidentiality is essential in maintaining trust within the financial system.

5. Avoidance of Conflicts of Interest

Members shall:

  • Identify and disclose any actual or potential conflicts of interest
  • Avoid situations where personal interests may impair professional judgment
  • Refrain from accepting improper gifts, inducements, or benefits
  • Ensure decisions are made objectively and independently

Transparency in managing conflicts protects institutional credibility.

6. Ethical Leadership & Professional Conduct

Members shall:

  • Promote ethical behavior within their organizations
  • Treat colleagues, clients, and stakeholders with respect and fairness
  • Avoid discrimination, harassment, or unethical influence
  • Demonstrate responsible leadership and governance practices

AIB members are expected to be role models within the banking profession.

7. Responsible Use of Designation

Members may use their AIB designation only:

  • While membership remains active
  • In accordance with AIB guidelines
  • Without misleading implication of regulatory authority

Misuse of designation or unauthorized representation may result in disciplinary action.

8. Academic Integrity & Examination Conduct

Members and candidates shall:

  • Avoid plagiarism or academic misconduct
  • Not engage in cheating or examination fraud
  • Maintain confidentiality of examination materials
  • Report suspected misconduct to AIB

Integrity in assessment ensures credibility of certification standards.

9. Commitment to Public Interest

Members shall:

  • Support financial stability and responsible banking
  • Promote transparency and fairness in financial dealings
  • Contribute to strengthening public trust in banking institutions

The banking profession serves a broader societal responsibility.

10. Reporting Ethical Violations

Members are encouraged to report suspected ethical violations through AIB’s formal reporting channels. Reports will be:

  • Treated confidentially
  • Reviewed impartially
  • Investigated in accordance with AIB governance procedures

Retaliation against individuals reporting in good faith is strictly prohibited.

11. Disciplinary Actions

Failure to comply with this Code of Ethics may result in:

  • Written warning
  • Suspension of membership
  • Revocation of certification
  • Permanent removal from AIB membership
  • Public notification of disciplinary action (if necessary)

Disciplinary decisions will follow due process and documented review procedures.

12. Acknowledgment

By applying for membership, certification, or affiliation with AIB, individuals acknowledge that they have read, understood, and agreed to abide by this Code of Ethics.
